This is a bike that, when you ride around on it, people constantly stop you and look and ask questions. It rides like nothing else and looks like nothing else. Totally custom with a beautifully made frame out of Waltworks in Utah. As you can see, the welds are fantastic -- Walt is a real craftsman. The bike has hardly been ridden -- maybe five times. There's not a scratch on it. The massive wheels are hard to spin up, but once you have them rolling, they roll over anything.
The Waltworks 36er is probably the most mainstream 36" bike currently being made. It uses all modern components and rides like a modern bike. It's hard to say whether it's better suited for cruising or off road riding. It's certainly not made for single-track but it does surprisingly well on rough and rugged trails. It's super smooth to ride, but it's hard to be technical on a nearly 40 pound bike. That's especially true here because most of the weight is in the wheels. Yes, you absolutely can ride a wheelie on it... it's a myth you can't!
Of course, the gearing has to be all different because of the wheel size. This is handled simply by putting the strangely sized NSB sprocket up front, giving it only 10 speeds. Those speeds, however, are right in the middle of the most common range and cover pretty much everything you'd need. I can get it going fast enough to where I'm spinning the highest gear, but it's not very common.
The bike was originally built with 180mm discs, but I swapped them for 200s because there just wasn't enough stopping power. Now there's plenty of brake. I also swapped out a few other parts to make it more rideable. As you can see, most of the components are Shimano Deore XT (see detailed list below).
The wheels were custom built by a wheel builder working with Walt. The spokes are from some kind of motorcycle wheels, and the tires themselves are manufactured in small batches by Walt. The inner tubes are made for unicycles. Given all that, the wheels look great and are very well finished -- you'd never know they weren't machine made ;-)
This frame should be considered large or even extra large (even though it measures 19" on the seat tube). The seat can only go so low before hitting the back wheel.
sunk a lot of money in to this bike / work of art, and I'm not planning on letting it go for some ridiculous offer. On the other hand, I realize I did the fun part by choosing everything, and I can't expect to get fully reimbursed.
MEASUREMENTS (SEE IMAGE WITH ORANE LINES):
Seattube A 19"
Toptube (effective) B 24"
Headtube C 5"
Chainstay D 20"
Wheelbase E 48"
I've had quite a few questions about 36ers since posting this auction. Generally they are considered bikes for taller people. There are a lot of advantages to them.
The bike brand DirtySixer has quite a following among tall people, and they have a few informational videos on youtube:
