I was recently diagnosed with a small disc herniation in the lumbar area Madder . I don´t have pain which is good, but my back always feels weak even after a ton of core strenghtening exercices ( Im ripped!). This is just my third week after injurie though.

Any of you guys had the same injurie and now continue to ride hard? downhill, dirt jumping and street? I would like to hear some positive stories...

You seem to be have lucked out. My girlfriend has a herniated disc and 3 bulging discs in her lower back. Shes in the middle of 3 weeks of physical therapy and has gotten alot better. After she hurt it she could barely walk, was in tears from the pain, and it hurt to stand, sit or lay down. Since she started physical therapy shes almost back to normal. The doctors just cleared her to get back on her bike again. I would make sure you get an MRI and maybe do physical therapy. They can do alot to stretch you back and relieve muscle pressure on that part of your spine. They also told her to maybe look into an inversion table to keep her back from compressing too much.

I had an MRI yesterday! I knew I was lucky as soon as I heard some horror stories... I don´t have pain, just a slight discomfort and muscle weakness. My fear is that after I'm completely healed this happens again (it happened in the past). I hope your girlfriend gets better too!

Anyone riding HARD after this?

I haven't had that particular injury, but all I can say is a penny of physical therapy is worth a benjamin. Work hard at PT and it will be well worth it. Remember, as a general rule of thumb, the more muscle someone has, the less prone to injury they are (to a point).

Thanks! I will work hard but also would like to hear some positive stories, to get motivated! Anyone?

I have a similar injury. the best thing I ever did was start wearing a kidney belt. I always wear one riding my dirt bike but never thought about it when I was on my dh bike. It gives you the support you need in your lower back.

Im definitely going to get one of those belts, and maybe a new handlebar, with more rise. Thanks!

learn Dr. Stu McGills big 3 to help stabilize your spine. A brace isnt a wise long term decision as it will only promote deconditioning

I'm thinking to buy one to restart biking... I´ve checked those exercices and I' ve been doing 2 of them already, I might add the other one too to my workout! I´m feeling much better, getting stronger each day that goes by. 0 pain. I think I´m going to be 100% in one week, but this time I'm going to take it easy and just start biking in June, slowly...

Thanks! Anyone riding after this type of injurie?

I had the same injury at my L5/S1 and had a piece of the disc removed. I ride DH as aggressively as I can and I am in the best shape of my life. All I can say is try PT first and also, you may be surprised how weak your back is compared to your abs. A lot of people have ripped abs, but a very weak back. PT can help you with all of this. If it does not, do your research and see a surgeon. Make sure you go to a specialist, not your local orthopedic surgeon. Places like the Hospital for Special Surgery, not your local Dr.
You can be 100pct if you follow through on treatment.

Good luck.

Yes definitely! I think that was my main problem, muscle imbalances. A PT that I saw said exactly that. My abs are/were much stronger than my lower back. I do work abs but for each rep of abs I do two that target only back muscles, to try to correct the imbalance. Thanks for the support guys!

I'm new to the forum and not a DH rider, but I also had L5/S1 surgery to remove a number of fragments that had lodged up against different nerves causing paralysis below the knee. That was 5 years ago, and while I've experienced pain/discomfort every single day since the surgery, I continue doing everything I did pre-injury at levels on par and often above where I was before. Like others have stated, it's all about following PT and not letting it get you down. You might also have to accept some level of discomfort from now on, but hopefully not. My PT always wanted me to work up to the "red-line", but not over it. FWIW, I was back working as a firefighter 2 months post-op and have only missed two days since returning to work. If anything, I think I'm more fit today.
Good luck.
