2007 Ellsworth Dare? the add says it's good, but needs a shock rebuild, how much would that cost? i'm an intermediate downhiller, but i'm still learning about the tech, and if you want i could post the add.
so here's the add, http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bik/3137175931.html I think it doesn't look bad, but i don't know anything about forks, rebuilds, and so i wanted another opinion.
looks nice a chainring will run you 30 bucks and i googled the shock and it must be a typo cause ive never heard of bomic and neither has google so id look into that but generally speaking a rebuild kit for my rp23 was 17 bucks and took me 45 mins and its like as 30 dollar cost at your lbs for labour
Sweet! thank you! I think they might mean bomber? but i'm not sure, and thank you for the info about shock rebuilds!

I'm trying to get a first mtb to do some trail/xc riding. I've been riding road since january and my fitness is pretty good. My budget is $1000-$1500, so I was thinking of getting a hardtail 29er
Would something like the Santa Cruz Highball Aluminum D be a good choice? Anything else good in this price range? Thanks
Stumpy FSR Comp or Santa Cruz Blur LT (R AM Kit) or?...
Overall, I'm looking for a solid trail bike. The local terrain definitely comes down more on the XC side of things but I do plan to make the occasional 2 hour drive to some gravity fed/DH-ish trails as well. I realize no bike will last long without regular and thorough maintenance, but yes, I am also lazy and my wrench skills have seen better days so maintenance difficulty is a consideration for me.
3k USD is the absolute upper bound of my budget (hoping to catch the Blur on sale during the off-season if that is what I end up going for). My LBS carries Specialized, Santa Cruz, and Kona and I plan to testride but they certainly have their favorites and I would like some unbiased perspective.
Regarding my background: I used to ride in high school... a lot... that was some 10, 15 years ago though. Now I'm all grown up at 6'1" and 160lbs. I recently licked blood again when a friend moved abroad and I got his old bike. I know that I will stick with this for a few years, maybe even do some recreational rider races, so I am OK dropping a bit more than one would on a just getting started bike in hopes that it will save me some coin in the long run.
So what do you want this bike for? XC or DH? I mean if you want to take an XC bike DH go for it, but you will break stuff. Be it you or the bike. You can take a DH or FR bike on XC trails ... but #1 its overkill and #2 it's going to be heavy.
That said the bikes you chose are more of a middle ground, around 120mm-140mm travel so its more of an All Mountain category. If you were going to chose a NEW bike out of those brands, Specialized, Santa Cruz, and Kona, I'd go for the Santa Cruz Nomad (that's my personal preference). Its going to rock those DH style trails, not break and still be able to be pressed into service on XC trails. That said, the Blur isn't a bad choice either and for you may be the best choice. Slightly less travel, but less $$ too. It will do better on the XC than the Nomad, but a little less so on the DH trails than the Nomad too.
The stumpy is going to be great for XC, but it is less travel and steeper head angle make it a bit sketchy on DH. And blah blah blah ... everyone likes/has stumpies ... blah blah blah.
I've ridden both the Nomad and the Blur and the Stumpy on the same style trails, and I'd rate them in that order of best to worse. Truthfully if you are spending that much on your first bike I would ride them all. A worthwhile shop will let you do more than a ride around the parking lot and have demo's available. TRY THEM ALL. Anyone here can tell you all day what you should do, but what is right for you will be what you like the most on the trail. And you shouldn't decide any other way.
Well yeah, middle ground is definitely what I'm fishing for (i.e. Trail/All Mountain). If push comes to shove XC will factor more than DH capability (65/35 importance) but again, I want something that won't snap because I take it down a bit of chatter every once in a while either. As for the Nomad I definitely considered it but at 3.5k it's significantly above my max price point.
