Hey. Im pretty crap when it comes to knowing what to look for in a laptop so i'm guessing you could help.
I need it for 6th form and just general use, no gaming. Everyone i know says that MACs are so overated and you can buy a £500 laptop with better spec. any suggestions or recommendations?

generally people say macs are overrated because they don't want you to have one when they can't afford one.

im in year 10 and my brothers finished school 2 years ago and this is how me and him view it.

MacBooks are solid aluminium and will last longer as they don't crack or get scratched
they don't get viruses so no hassle just and no extra cost every year
the average life of a macbook is 17 years where as a pc is 4
macs have much higher spec as standard
they are much faster
they keep their value better
walk into an apple shop and they will sort out any problems you have
2011 models onwards run ddr3 and 13,15and i7
if you love windows so much you can run windows on a macbook
you can get word, powerpoint and excel for a mac if you wish.
has a fully backlit keyboard
runs seamlessly with iPads, iPhones and iPads

i think you see where i am coming from i have never had anything windows in my house and have 7 macs and there is a reason for this

sorry if i posted it after you got a laptop

macs have much higher spec as standard Lower spec for the price actually
they are much faster Slower for the price
they keep their value better True

I was going to reply to the original post but I realised it's almost a year old so I don't think I'll bother now.

lets face it they are better!
it a lot more difficult for an averaage person to run osx on a pc
macs dont get virusess they ocassionally get bugs
as macs have more uptodate things they wont be obselete for like 20 years i have a powerbook g4 that i still use i just added an airport card to it so i can use it in wifi areas and i cann tell you for a fact it may be 15 years old but it a heck of a lot faster than my mates vista pc which is an 09 laptop

Saying that Macs don't get viruses is just wrong.
Criminals are constantly developing malware for Windows and OSX, there's no such thing as a virus-proof machine. Look: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/9201908/Apple-Flashback-virus-outbreak-tackled.html The Flashback virus walked straight through OSX security and had over 600000 machines controlled at one point. That article is from April.

With regards to your "15 year old" Powerbook being faster than a 09 Laptop, your friend must have bought a heap!

I'm not saying they are bad, I think they are very user-friendly, fool-proof, fast and they look nice.
It's just that for the same price you can get a far more powerful and better-featured Windows machine that will last just as long if you look after it. Which was what the OP was originally asking!
