Hey guys, I just bought a used 29er, and I was wondering what kind of tires you would recommend for mostly hardpack situations with some loose stuff, also sand (desert terrain).

Some folks I know are loving Ardents, or ardent to crossmark and arent too far from SF. You could get away with an SB8 our back to something with a little more grip up front. Or a pair of Captain control tires from specialized are also great. I've run them here in PHX, and Durango with confidence.
I haven't used them on a 29er just my commy , I run it at about 40 psi and it's 2,25 and comes up a little smaller than others I also ran it out back because it's fast rolling with its rounded shape it's also pretty light too if you get the folding one , the tyre is good at most things like road , hard pack and general summer riding , but really struggles in thick mud as it isn't a mud tyre A cross mark rear and a ardent front seems like a good way to go for you
Id swear by crossmarks, they punch way above their weight in terms of grip and still roll quick, they can be unsettled by rocky stuff but that was only 2.1 tires so most would. A 2.25 rear and 2.25 Ardent front would be perfect for you imo
Have you ever run crossmarks before, and if so, how did you like them?
As a late reply, I'm slightly redundant to this group of replies. I haven't had one on the front, but it's a good rear. Roll fast, corner consistently and are decent climbers on the loose considering how small the knobs are compared to other tires I've run here.
I've rocked them on the front for a while as we get super hardpack towards this time of the year and I like them. Not as much bite as say an ardent but still rad. Good rear tire if you need speed and traction.

Well where I am mud's not really a problem, but getting to trails is currently, and you mentioned that the crossmarks are good on the road, so it seems like for now a pair of crossmarks would be great for me (I found a pair of used crossmarks and I'm a little short on money). Do you think 2.1 are ok or should I avoid them?
I am finding that I am loosing grip frequently on my front when using a bontrager xr4 at 30psi (tried 20 too, bit better but still happened. This is the 2.35 version. Would it be best to replace it with a fr4 for example? Or highroller2?
Trying to fit a tubeless tyre, not done it before, having some trouble so thought I'd ask here (couldn't see any relevant/active tubless specific topics)...
I'm using a Stan's Flow ZTR rim with Stan's tubeless rim tape and valve, Schwalbe Hans Dampf tubeless tyre.
I'm trying having trouble inflating the tyre, I've watched some instructional videos on the Stan's site and others where they put the tyre on the rim, soap it up, then tap the tyre which seats the bead into the rim before inflating it no problem. I have followed these steps, but I can't get the tyre bead to mount the rim properly, it just slips back down to in the drop channel of the rim.
Put a tube in, inflate and leave it for a few hours, then try again. That will help with the shape of the tire bead (I am assuming the tire is new or was in a folded state for a while).
OR
Pull the valve and crank up the compressor pressure just to get it seated.
Ok, thanks. Will try sticking a tube in there, the tyre is new, so was all rolled up.
I was just using a floor pump, but I might be able to use the compressor at the garage across the street. Failing that, I will see if British Airways has any cheap air fares
