The higher spec model comes with a Domain Dual Crown and the lower spec with a X-Fusion single crown. I would personally get the frame and build it the way you like.
The Domain dual crown is heavy, but plush. It just depends on what you're using it for. Wouldn't be considered race worthy in terms of weight and tune-ability like a various Boxxer models, but would probably be just fine for everyone looking at the cheaper end of DH worthy completes (see also: Scott Voltage FR 20). I personally think the spec is great for budget minded downhill rigs - hope they keep coming down in price in years to come...
Doesn't look like you can buy just the Status frame, but you could upgrade the fork. Just consider though that you're investing in a DH frame with 135 rear spacing rather than 150. At some point, you should be building a Demo or similar.
Although, just looking at the Status spec, a 170mm seems way under-forked for a 200mm travel frame? Odd. Save up for the Status II if you're really gonna get into downhill.

I've just bought the 2013 status 2, its a lovely looking bike but as far as the mechanics of it are concerd I'm a novice at downhil, its my first DH bike but it feels great to ride for me!!
Yeah I went from a stumpjumper to that and thought it must be as 3 times as heavy! Yeah it's great mate I'm really gettin into downhilling. My mates got a demo 8 2012 few year if the status 2 and I'll prob move up to that!
