The only advantage to a light bike i think, is you can ride it for longer periods of time without being too knackered.
Who cares? Have fun and get exercise. Heavier bikes are usually bombproof.

Note, I said usually, and didn't mention anything about lighter bikes. But what I'm saying is, there's more of a chance that a old 2002 Iron Horse would survive(or be less damaged) being dropped off a huge building instead of a custom Milkshake.
