lately when i jump my bike and it doesnt matter how big i get a severe pain in my right knee. it hurts a lot but and it only hurts when i bend my knee back past 30 degrees, its also not in my whole knee but under my knee cap. it feels more like a burning to... i have never injured that knee/leg before and have never even fallen on it... also after about 1 to 2 weeks it goes away and only comes back when i ride my bmx and not my dh bike or xc bike. does anyone know what it might be? should i go see a doctor or just get rid of my bmx bike lol or ignore it

thanks for your help!

It seems you that got knee inflammation.Do not do too much strenuous activities , particularly ride your bmx. those activities would hurt your knee cartilage. I advice you to see a doctor and don't let it worse. After riding ,lie your legs flat, then with handle gently knead your knee joints, can alleviate the pain.

I had something similar. I'm no doctor so you should go see one if it really hurts. Severe pain usually implies that something is quite wrong.

It could be something like jumpers knee, research it. I guess it only hurts on your bmx because you dont have the suspension so it creates more tension when you push for the jump. Personally it nearly all goes away if I stretch my quadriceps on a daily basis. Since it was a big trauma, it is chronic so as soon as I stop stretching it creeps back but I can still do all the physical activities I want. So yeah, this could be serious, I'd go see a specialist before it worsens, especially if you're saying its not going away.

it has gone away and i think i might just stop riding my bmx bike, its fine even doing 12 to 15 foot drops on my dh bike but as soon as i get on my bmx it hurts within 5 minuts

Problem solved then. Joints aren't too fond of impacts. Even if you go bigger on your dh rig the suspension absorbs a lot of it, which is not the case on a bmx.

Oh and Correct me if I'm wrong but bmx aren't really created in the optic of optimal ergonomy, so that probably makes it even worse than the dh bike in the end.

Go see a physio therapist. They will do an assessment and give you some simple exercises to relieve the problem. Take this from somebody that loves bikes and has ridden BMX-DJ-DH-XC and snowboarding in the winters. I didn't heed this advice and 3 knee surgeries later I wish I had. Could save you lots of pain and off seasons from injury.

Sounds a lot like meniscal pain. What is meant by this, is that there are 2 pieces of cartilage between your tibia and femur which allow the 2 bones to move fluidly and reduce friction. What happens most of the time is that your femur and tibia are grinding on your meniscus' in your knee, and after a while that cartilage will wear down from impacts such as rigid landings from being on a BMX. When you think of the amount of force your knees are taking, you will quickly realize how much stress is being brought onto the meniscus.

I would go to your doctor and get him to take a look at it, they do tests with pulling and twisting your knees to see if your meniscus' are injured, and most times they will refer you to get an MRI to look in the deep tissue.

I've had my fair share of knee problems from playing football for 10 years, and my meniscus' in my left leg give me the same pain you are describing when I ride too. Most of the time they will "scope" your knee joint, so basically they go in and clean up all the damaged cartilage and get rid of the crepitus in your knee joint and it usually runs a lot better and pain free after that and some rehab.

the pain has gone away completely ever sense i changed the way i was landing on my bikes, i was putting all the weight on my right knee and keeping my left leg completely ridged and bringing my right knee all the way up to my chest instead of absorbing the impact equily with both legs

Thats wicked awesome then man you have it lucky! But be sure to keep an eye on that sort of thing, the sport we do is probably the most physically taxing on our legs!!

My friend has knee pain when riding and switched to an oval front chainring and now says he doesn't have the pain anymore. I think it only applies to a single chainring setup in the front though. Im going to try it next.
