Hi all, i am going to be moving to red deer for few months this year for a few months before travelling round canada. I was just wondering if any of you could shed some light on whether or not to bring my dh bike over from the uk and is it going to be worth the extra cost putting it on the flight? Is there many trails in the area or would i be wasting my time a bit?
I might have access to a car to get around but wont always have it for full days so is there places i could be dropped off for an afternoons riding then picked up later with it not being too far?
Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated also links on google maps so i can check it out
thanks in advance!

Red Deer is relatively flat, and not many hills around that area. I think that bringing your bike there would be a hassle, unless you were planning on driving a couple hours either to Calgary which has a relatively small hill, or Westward towards to mountains.

I agree. Leave it. Not worth it

What about my all mountain bike? Still not worth it?

You're better off with a road bike if you're gonna do that Smile

Unfortunately unless you want to drive quite a ways, not a tonne of riding in Red Deer

You guys have no fking clue, no offence. Definitely bring the all mountain bike. there are some really rad xc/all mountain stuff that you can link into 2-3hr loops at a good pace with some quality single track involved all in town. There's also a 3-4 minute ripper dh trail followed by some absolutely awesome all mountain loops by the ski hill that unfortunately you'd have to poach as the new owners of the property aren't to keen on bikes but definitely worth it if you can sneak in. Also there's the bike park in town that offers some kind of fun freeride lines, nothing huge and a pretty rad dj/slopestyle park as well as some sick xc trails. If you plan on getting out of town to ride a few days, Moose Mountain (Calgary) and Baseline (Rocky Mtn. House ish) are only 2.5 hrs away and has no doubt the best downhill riding this side of the BC border and Kicking Horse and fernie are both about 4 hours away. But yeah as far as local riding in red deer goes you'll want to head down to Wipe Out Ski and Bike http://wipe-out.ca/ for the shop rides. Definitely the quickest way to learn all the gems around town as well as hook up with a bunch of really cool dudes. If I were still living up there I'd be super down to show you around but unfortunately I've moved to Calgary. Basically, if you're willing to pedal around you can have hours of fun in red deer, don't let the general flatness discourage you.

@ zshipowick
Cheers for your post, i thought it would be the case that there would be something tucked away somewhere and it just needs to be found. Like i said originally i am prepared to drive as i will just persuade the missus that we are getting to see a bit more of the country!! Nice easy blag!
I'm still undecided though as which bike to bring. i hear what your saying about being able to do a bit of everything on my AM bike but the i didn't really want to bring it and it's getting time for a fair bit of work on it. Plus having just built up my new DH rig i kinda want to be riding it.
What's the second hand market like over there? I know there's plenty of bargains to be had over here so would it just be worth maybe getting a hardcore hardtail on the cheap to chuck around in spare time locally?
Finally road riding?!! No thanks, i'm not at a midlife crisis!!
Also it's no real hassle to get a bike over there, £20 / $40 so it's nothing!!

Yeah man, if you want to be riding your dh bike as much as possible I would definitely bring it over here. If you're willing to drive the riding is defintely awesome. Defintely look into getting sme sort of do everything bike for in town though because the riding really has the potential to be pretty good if you know where to go. And anytime you want to do some riding in the calgary area or beyond I'm always down to ride and if I'm not at a resort somewhere I'll be at moose every weekend.

Oh and if you wanna look in my video channels I've got some decent head cams and edits of alot of the riding around here.
