So Im looking at building a wooden kicker but I want to try something different, I like the cut out style, think AT's showdown style of ramp, or the style they build in Whistler. I'd like to be able to put 2x6's on for the ride surface instead of Plywood. The problem Im having is that I thought it would be simple to use a 2x12's for the tranny cut outs but I'm finding the tranny is too steep and won't work with a single 2x12. I see these everywhere now but can't figure out how there makin it happen. I have seen bracing on the 2x12 but I was hoping to avoid doin this. Help. Thanks.

Thanks man, thats a solid link. I think Im better off using 2x10's or 2x12's than the 2x4's he used, seems like the more joints the weeker the tranny. I'll give it a shot. Still curious if i can get a 10' tranny out of a single 2x12?

how tall is your kicker going to be?

I laid out the tranny on some chip board today to get a feel for it, I think 6' is good, 5' doesnt have enough kick at the top and 7' is just loopy.

sounds good. with 10 foot radius and 6 feet tall, it'll probably look kinda like this....

My buddy did a good video on how to build a kicker. He does use ply for the sides, but it looks like what you're trying to do.

hey guys reviving this thread..

when your building the ramp with the 2x12 sides. how do you draw the radius line, onto the 2x12's?

then how do you make sure both 2x12 sides are the same radius?

Im revamping my lil slope course, gonna need a couple new ramps and would like to try a different method this time

thanks, I did look through that thread. but the thing that Im having trouble figuring out is how to draw a 10' radius onto the2x12. properly?

do you draw a template on plywood and put the 2x12 on top of the ply and try to cut the shape into it?

I want a 6ft kicker with a 10' radius. but im not sure how to get the right radius drawn into the 2x12 sides

Get a 10' length of string put a nail in the ground and make a circle. It's just a really big compass.

I would use 2x4s myself I think the 2x12s would be too kinky, you would have a much smoother transition with 2x4s. As for the strength concerns, both are only 2" thick so they are equally strong.
