I want to install a Shimano Saint M810 on my bike that previously had a SRAM X7 derailleur and corresponding 7 speed cassette. I understand that I have to purchase Saint shifters in addition to the derailleur itself, but do I have to purchase a Shimano 9 speed cassette to go along with it? I want it to work smoothly and will most likely be able to scrounge together the money to afford all of it but I would prefer not to purchase the cassette. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks guys.
9 speed and 7 speed are not going to be compatible. You also better replace your chain as well.. but you probably already know that. I 7 speed chain is going to give you a little issues on a narrow, 9 speed cassette.
