I just watched "At Home With Sam Hill" and "Steve Peat, Guy Martin & Joe Barnes: Mojo Trail Diaries in Scotland" back-to-back. Monster Energy is front and center. I love watching the riding but can't help to worry about my kids taking notice to these gifted riders hammering 160mg of caffeine. 1 to maybe 2 Mtn. Dews per week is plenty for me, never touched the energy drinks. Anyone else notice the heavy emphasis on this mild upper? It. doesn't seem like a healthy direction for the industry IMOP.
The thing is is that it temporarily is very helpful. Before a race or before a fast ride droppin a Rockstar or whatever drink you choose definitely helps me perform better. However, hydration is a huge factor for why riders shouldn't be drinking Red Bulls etc. every time they gear up to go riding. Not only does it offer no hydration unlike water but it actually depletes your bodies hydration for before and after.
If it's more about the money and less about the ethics maybe some of the caffeinated (i.e. sponsored) riders should start pushing tobacco products. Personally, I don't see a great deal of difference.
sponsorship..... not all good....its main aim is profit after all.
we should point young riders in the right direction so they can make informed choises and are clear about what an athlete really needs in terms of nutrition and what is possibly harmful to your health.
The thing is that it's a temporary "boost". If you're fatigued and your system is already running dry, you might get a little boost from energy drinks but once the effect fades you'll be even worse than before. That's where proper nutrition is key in my opinion.
A lot of these energy drinks are a con, Red bull for example (Tests were done and you need four tins to feel any effect) and a lot contain aspartame which has been linked to Alzheimers. It's all generally crap in tins.
