HI, ive got a 2006 enduro s-works that currently running 3x9 but im currently setting it up to aim more towards the AM/enduro style of riding but still wanting to maintain ride-ability for long days out.

I am planning to convert to 1x9 and possibly to 1x10 when the finances are convenient for the rear end swap, in the meantime i was just looking for some advice as to what setup i should look at for the front to achieve said goals.

so far as a base im considering the following, and i was just wondering what y'all think and if you could maybe steer me in the right direction

i figure the 34t ring should mean i can still manage most climbs, but still be able to get some torque on the downhill.

thanks in advance for any tips! cheers

no-one running a single ring who can give me some pointers?

I run a 1x10 on my s-works endure as well and wouldn't change back for anything. It's perfect. I run a 32 tooth in the front and a 11-32 cassette in the rear. I do everything from long tough xc rides to downhill. I feel as though the gear combo is just right for my riding.

For a chainguide I would for sure suggest the Straitline Silent Guide. No moving parts and its super quiet as well. I used to have the same guide you are looking at (the MRP) but i felt it was just too complex and so much mud got caught up within it.

For cranks I currently run Shimano Saint but I am soon getting the Sram XO carbon cranks. I don't know what your budget is but i would check out the E.13 cranksets. I've heard nothing but positive things about them. Nice lightweight and stiff crankset for the money.

Hope this helps guide you in the right direction!

Thats some great info thanks so much for the reply.

ive a few more questions if you dont mind, is your enduro the 2006 model the same as mine, if so, do you know what style of chain guide mount it has, i.e ISCG or ISCG05 or old etc, would be very helpful thanks.

also just wondering if you would recommend any low-medium price front crank setups just to get me started.

also just wondering, do i need anything else to convert from a triple ring on the front to a single ring, i.e do i need any strange spacers or certain BB or anything else in general, or just the crankset and a new chain?

thanks again!

My Enduro is the 2011 carbon one, so a little different than yours. Your chainguide tabs are going to be ISCG, just the regular ones i beleive. You can double check that by calling Specialized, they are very easy to deal with and quite informative as well.

With that crankset, it includes the bottom bracket and everything so all you need to get is the chainring. Which for that I would go with the RaceFace single ring. I run a 32 tooth ring from them and it has worked out great so far. Also, make sure whatever front ring you decide to go with doesn't have shifting ramps on it (make sure it's a designated single ring).

Only other thing you are going to need is a chain. Depending on what speed you are going to do (9 spd or 10spd) you will need to get the appropriate chain for that.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2011 Specialized Enduro and it is ISCG (Old, 03...) Not ISCG 05, so my very educated guess is that if you have ISCG tabs they are the old style. That being said 1X10 offers a much wider range, you can run a 11-36, those two extra teeth can make a world of difference. At the same time you can catch some nice deals on 9 speed stuff right now.

Thanks to both of you again, very useful replies! im going to start with a 1x9 then possibly upgrade to a 1x10 later on in the year for the wider range, depends how i get on with 1x9 i suppose.

still havent managed to find out what style of ISCG i have exactly lol, having trouble getting in touch with specialized at the moment.

thanks once again and any further input/advice is massively appreciated!

You have ISCG not ISCG 05.

its possible i've just had a money saving epiphany, should i not just remove my front 3 chainrings from my XT setup and replace it with a 32t single ring and a bashguard?

i cant see any reason why not right? it should all fit with a chainguard etc right?

ok, so a little update, new 12-34 rear sram casette, new chain, ethirteen 32t front chainring and straitline silentguide fitted, currently running with my XT derailler and shifter but in the process of swapping to an X-9 setup, new cables and outers at the ready, brand new DHX5.0 awaiting fittment and pricing up some Sektor RL solo airs, its all coming together, hopefully in time for megavalanche!!

PICS to follow!
