Alright, so I've been really happy with my Santa Cruz Butcher up to this point. I'm starting to get a small, constant squeak out of the rear hub and I was wondering if anyone here knows whats causing it. Is it an oil issue or is it components getting angry at me?

I rode in some pretty heavy mud the other day and I push what the bike can do because I came off an '08 Giant Glory 1. I figure the problem stems from either of those two things.

How do you know it is coming from your rear hub?

Good, question. I assume it's the rear hub because the squeak is at the rear end of the bike. It could be the derailleur. Is there any way to check this?

Process of elimination. Grease/oil one component at a time and recheck. Once you have done everything you can without taking the wheel off then its probably bearings inside the hub.

More than likely your linkage (not familiar with the butcher), when was the last time you serviced it?

There's a bucket-load of cogs on the back of that bike, I just checked. Is your chain oiled properly? Are you hearing the squeak as you ride?

Have you got a jig? If you have, that would help. Coz you could stick the bike up in the jig and put your face right near the rear end and slowly turn the cranks to see exactly where it is coming from.

Have you left the bike out in heavy rain at all? Or been riding in very wet weather?

After a good muddy ride hose the bike down (not with a high pressure washer) and give it a bit o TLC, hard to say where the squeak is but if a general clean/lube does not fix it, pick another likely part , strip it own clean and lube and see if it stops...

its time well spent in my opinion as all maint. is good mainttup
your bike will like it and you will find the squeaker sooner or laterSalute
