So, I went on my Honeymoon to the south island of NZ and rode lots of bikes. Then my wife and I decided that we didn't want to leave and that we needed to move to New Zealand. You folks really have a good thing going down there!! We rode in the Port Hills, Alexandra, Queenstown and a couple of other places. Now it turns out the Wifey is a nurse so we can get work almost anywhere. We only have another month to decide where to move. Where would you go to for the best town and the best mountain biking? We are both experianced riders- I race pro DH and Enduro. We were thinking Nelson, Christchurch or Wellighton. Anyone have any help for us? Thanks for the input!! Can't wait for the move!! Smile

i think it would be hard to get a nursing job in queenstown unlike Rotorua but you never know

Settle in Nelson. Its a growing (small) City, you should have no trouble finding nursing jobs. Best weather in the country, some of the best riding in the country, trails everywhere (I lived in Nelson for nearly 15 years). Dont recommend Christchurch. No offence but Chch has shitty weather, the riding isnt the greatest, and post earthquake its just not a wise idea.

Thanks for all the input! Glad to hear that Nelson has so many trails. We just sent papers to the requirement/ job placement company we are working with and put Nelson as our number one place we would like to live! Can't wait, we will be there in November/ December. Just in time for our winter to start up here and just getting into the swing of your summer!! Should be the endless summer of bike riding!!!!

Hey, I am also planning on moving to NZ next winter. All I want to do is ride DH, should I go to Rotorua or Queenstown?

i live in rotorua and the downhilling here is awesome! id probly say queenstown would be better though. in all the videos of it, it looks crazy fun.

If you want DH go Queenstown for sure, bigger hills and if heaps of them are shuttleable.
Not so much DH in Rotorua to come here just for that, ya need a trail bike to make the most of what we have here.

Dunedin as well! good DH runs down signal hill plus Loads of xc trails around town, plus the wife can get a job at Duendin Hospital easy.

You also have Alexandra, Queenstown and Wanaka within 3 hours away. Also Christchurch is only 4 hours as well.

Best of luck on your move!
