Knee Pads or Shin/Knee?

Just wondering if I should go to knee pads from shin guards. Bash up my knees and inner thighs a fair bit, but not sure if I'm going to regret uncovering my shins. I've slipped a pedal and gouged my calf, but that's not protected w/ my shin pads anyway. Any thoughts on this? Knee pads seem more comfortable and will stay in place.

Personal preference, riding style and type of trail.

I wear sixsixones Kyle Straits knee pads and separate shin protection (veggieskins)
The dh runs I like best are steep, rooty and rocky so I wear both because the loose rocks bounce up. This year I am riding faster as I get better skilled so the consequence for injury is greater.

I ride with more confidence and a little more aggressively when I wear more protection

I've been riding for years, trails, jumps, DH and only used knee pads, never shins. But thats what I feel comfortable in. I wear 661 Veggie knee pads.

I wear 661 Kyle Strait knee pads. A month ago I had a pretty big crash and cut my shin up pretty good (see pics in my album) so I bought TLD shin pads. But the knee pads provide way more knee protection than the shin guards. I'll keep wearing the knee pads because I would rather protect against knee damage than cuts and bruises on my shins. I've crashed hard on my knees way more than I have cut my shins. Personal preference though.

I too have the 661 kyle Strait Knee pads, i've never bothered with shin guards as it's always my calfs that get covered in bruises. Thery are comfortable, but a bit warm on the rare uk sunny day.

I like my Raceface DIY armor knee/shins. Full coverage, hard shell, and really quite comfortable for a full day of riding, even in the 100 degree F heat here in Utah. Women's specific calf sizing, too!
