Anyone else with bad thumbs/surgery?

Long story short I had over a 10 year absence from riding. During that time I was skiing 150-200 days/year. Broken rt thumb in 2003 > rt thumb MCP joint/ligament reconstruct in 2010 > got surgery again in 2011 on the same thumb to remove tons of scar tissue from the joint.

Both surgeries were followed with tons of PT, yet the pain is lingering and since I started riding again in January its been getting worse. Hard impacts on the thumb from riding don't seem to be good for my thumb.

I have tried thick and thin grips and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I am always doing PT and exercises to try to increase strength, but I think I just need to get the entire MCP joint fused (which my hand surgeon said was my next step). It doesn't help that I do alot of work with my hands.

Anyone have any tips on what I can do to minimize the pain from hard AM riding? Something I should change in my riding position/bars/stem setup etc?

I'm in basically the same boat, had several years off the bike but I still ski and three years ago I broke my left thumb, (dam pole strap) it seemed ok for the most part a little sore now and then. I started riding again about a year ago and the thumb would hurt a little and then three weeks ago when I spent a day at Whistler (my first, so awesome) by the end of the day I could not hold onto the bar without horrible pain. Went to the doc yesterday and was told its post traumatic arthritis, supposedly a cortisone shot will help so I'm getting one next week and hopefully I can get back on the bike soon. I still don't know what the long term fix is if there is one but not riding anymore is not an option.

Not personally (a guy I work with cut his thumb off with a bandsaw though...), but I broke my wrist in 3 places a few years ago and have some issues with straining/impacting it. PT and maybe some sort of support/reinforcement might help (such as rocktape or the likes). Just something to distribute the impact around your thumb more, it helps with my wrist/knee at least.
