Hey,

This is my first post, sorry if this has been covered before. I have searched and not come up with suitable information.

I have had some issues with my hips during heavy crashes. During my first season in Whistler, I took a huge chunk out of both of my hips in separate crashes. In the one that effected my left hip, it removed nerve endings and after 10 months I still have not regained feeling in a large area at the top of my leg.

Does anyone have experience with hip protection for the upper hip? (above the bone, approximately where the muscle runs along the top of the bone) Padded shorts are not suitable for me as they cover the lower hip. I have been looking into Thor kidney belts, however it is only really the straps which cover the area in question. Pads that have the possibility of moving around will not work. I don't crash often, but when I do I hit the ground like a sack of shit. Think impacts like overshoots on A-Line and/or Crabapple hits.

Any help would be much appreciated.

dude, I know what your saying I always hurt my legs/hip bone when I fall.

my 661 chest/back vest armour has a bit of padding but it comes to the bottom of your ribs.

the padded shorts sound awesome maybe for me, I want to check them out.

I can't think of anything that suits your needs man. what if (crazy idea) you stole the pads out of a padded shorts or some kind of good pads and got a grandma or a uh sower ya know someone who does sewing. to sew them into your riding pants exactly where you want them! or use the kidney belt and sew the padding to it?

hopefully someone can shed some light

Hey!

I've also been searching for the same type of protection and I found this!

http://www.revzilla.com/product_images/0011/1460/Alpinestars_Comp_Pro_Shorts_detail.jpg

It's often used in MX under your pants/shorts. I haven't tried them yet but they're on my shoppinglist Smile

If you can't find anything, one other option would be to look into cutting the liner out of some hockey pants. There should be good padding in there and it shouldn't cost much to have them sewn into an existing butt pad underpant thing.

Thanks for the replies.

Am more interested in something purpose built/designed for this purpose rather than ghetto fixing something. I'll consider that if there are no other possibilities though.

AlexanderL: Not suitable for me. That covers the side of the upper leg, not the top of the hip.

Roller hockey hip pads such tour 90 etc. these will be less bulky than the ice hockey versions, but will still cover up high on the iliac crest area of hip. Too many styles to list. I'm in the same boat, need them for mx due to hip injury.

Unfortunately they are wayyy to bulky. Thanks though!

Anyone else have any ideas? I find it difficult to believe that no company makes pads attached to a belt or similar. Like a kidney belt minus the hardshell with pads for the hips.

Reebok 7k looks less bulky than some others, their 9 k looks like the pads don't come up high enough.
I have been slipping my detachable mx pant hip pads up under the kidney belt over the top of hip.

Those pads are exactly where they need to be. But I ride whistler and shit gets HOT. I don't think i could deal with a bib under my riding gear.

Thanks for the input!

Detatchable moto hip pads under a kidney belt actually sounds like a feasible idea. Kidney belt straps are really solid and will hold them in place. I'll seriously consider that one.
