Has anyone attempted to change their own oil on a Fox RC4 or an Elka stage 5? Of course the manufacturer says you cant. but has anyone tried? how did it go? On Elka's website it doesn't necessarily say you cant, just that it wont meet their specs...typical lingo to encourage further business from customer, or reason to void warranty.
My ultimate goal is to find a shock I can service myself. I've serviced my Marzocchi stuff for years, but am now running an RC4 rear shock. Aside from destroying piston heads, I tend to fry the oil within a month and am sick of having to send it to fox and not be able to ride for weeks, or putting up with crappy ride quality as alternative. I want to stay with 2 stage compression else I would go back to a ROCCO. I am considering the Elka to replace my RC4. I've searched the threads and cant find anything on the newer shocks. I cant be the only one wanting to service my own stuff.
Both are nitrogen charged. You can do it yourself if you have the specific tools for it. If you don't know exactly what you're doing I suggest you send them in for a rebuild.
luckily im very mechanical and have experience with hydraulics and valving. The nitrogen charging or recharging is no problem either. After discussion with my journeyman mechanic friend, we are likely gonna go for it.
