Truvativ 2 chainring crank set up 1X 9 ?

I am building a 2011 Transition Double. I was intending to make it 1x9. A friend of mine told me the Truvativ Hissfelt/Holzfeller DH cranks with two rings is fine because you just take off the small ring. My friend at the bike shop just told me however that the spacing will be off for the chainguide.

My background is Bmx and ss DJ bikes, and this is actually my first good geared bike, so I'm not familiar with chain guide / chain ring issues. Anyone have experience with this ?

Can someone tell me if this setup would suck? Why no chainguide ?!

i'm in a similar position, looking to change my current 3x9 trail bike into a 1x10. for chain guide alignment, couldn't you just use washers between the guide and frame to push it out to a point where it aligned with the chain? haven't done it but i don't see why it couldn't work well.

so . . . i took these cranks back. they were recommended as a light but strong crankset, (FSA) but they were just way too flexy. i could literally lean my weight down on my left pedal and watch the crank flex inwards. after riding years of chromoly bmx cranks with chromoly spindles, these just were too cheesy.

note how this particular chainguide works.

now i'm back with Holzfellers. like i said, these were the two-ring version, but i just want to use the larger ring. i took the small ring off. i was told i might need to grind down the posts for the small ring.... haven't quite decided that yet. and i think i need another roller for the top.... although it's possible just one tensioner on the bottom will work. . i guess i'll find out .... i could take the bash-ring off, but i kinda like the mid-school look of it... i doubt i'll be hitting rocks or logs with it, but who knows.....

so . . . . not that anyone cares . . . HAH! but there's severe alignment problem with this setup. (trying to adapt 2-ring truvativ holzfeller crankset to a 1X9 with MRP chainguide setup)

Keep us posted. I'm looking to change my XT 3 ring crank to a single. I've been using it as a double with a bash currently. No issues with a lower tensioner only (blackspire) at this time.

If it helps, i just changed from 2 x 10 to 1 x 10. All i did was take off the chain rings, put a smaller one on the outside leaving the space for the inner chain ring empty. Then i changed the chain guide and it's all worked perfectly.

well, I got it figured out. someone on the other forum mentioned bolting the chainring to the back of the spider tabs instead of the front. it hadn't occurred to me the cranks were designed to be able to do this. but this solved the issue. I didn't have to grind down anything. 2-ring holzfeller cranks set up as 1 X 9.

No chain guide on slope bikes is normally because during each run they don't actually change gears so not much chance of the chain coming off

Im doing the same thing with taking the small ring off of the truvativ holzfeller crankset. How does it affect the chainline.
