Rear shock size for demo 8 help

Rear shock has blown and it is old so looking to get a new one , old rear shock size 222mm or 8.75 .iwas wondering if you had to stick to same size or could you go slightly smaller or longer eg 8.5 or 9 without throwing the bikes geometry out to much cheers for any help
