Hi there! I am stumped on what kind of bike to get for myself, 5'3" petite lady and my hubby, 5'10" 210lbs. We are interested in back forest country trails, lots of stumps, jumps, rocks and mud!!! However I want a bike that can climb up easily and ride down without having to be too technical and being able to have some fun!!! I have been beating myself up with a hard tail no front shocks brother in laws bike and its time to get my own!!! Thank you for all the help, I really really appreciate it!!!

what sort of budget did you have in mind? and are you looking to buy used or new? sounds like an XC hardtail might fit the bill

Hoping to buy used as I don't want to exceed 700 each bike :/

That's about £450 right? Should be fine as long as the suspension you have is good quality, you'd be surprised what a hardtail can do. I'd definitely start look in the buysell In the xc bikes. If your making the jump from a rigid bike I think a nice light hardtail will be great. Maybe have a look at specialised rockhoppers and similar bikes?

Thank you! I always figured I should get a full suspension... Can you tell me why a hard tail would be better for what I want to ride? I appreciate all your advice! I am totally lost in the bike world =D

sounds like youre riding beginner/intermediate single track? if its your first 'proper' bike (without sounding patronizing haha), a hardtail with be ample to soak up all the bumps. itll teach you to ride smoother so that when you do upgrade to a full sus you'll have a better technique. with your budget in mind as well its better to get a quality hardtail than a cheap full suspension. that said, if you find a bargain im not going to be the one stopping you buying a full sus haha Smile

I got a specialized rock hopper 2012, this years model is now out. It has lock on front sus so you can turn the sus off for hills and road and turn in back on for the trials. I used mine for everything from trials, dirtjumps, rockgardens and longdistance rides. Great bike and components. Most mtb are unisex so you dont have to go for a girls bike. I payed £720 for mine brand new and the bike also comes in 3 grades i think its comp, pro and expert. The only diffrence is better componants the higher spec.
