I am currently doing a design project based around the health and fitness of biking. The goal is to create a bike helmet with an integrated heart rate monitor that would deliver data to your smart phone. This would eliminate the need to wear a wrist monitor since your already always wearing a helmet.

Would you use a product like this/would it be helpful? Thoughts, suggestions, or any kind of input is greatly appreciated!

Lazer just introduced that at interbike:

You would need to place the sensors at areas of superficial arteries to get a good reading. Must people who use HRMs usually have chest strap ones not wrist ones sense they are more reliable at picking up pulse. If the helmet is Anti+ compatible it would be more viable than phone connective IMO (phone apps tend to have large degrees of inaccuracy when used as bike computers).
