I am restoring a 2011 specialized demo 8 that the PO had really beat on.
I replaced the rear wheel bearings but noticed a weird thing with the freehub. Just before installing the rear wheel, I tighten the rear freehub assembly so that it is snug but not so much that the freehub drags. But when I install it on the bike and tighten the axle, it tightens the freehub assembly so the freehub drags. Is this normal? The bikes i've had experience with usually have a locknut so this isn't an issue. The only way i can get around it is to hold the freehub shaft with a wrench to prevent the assembly from tightening and binding.
Perhaps I am missing a locknut or a spacer that would prevent the freehub from binding up during assembly? If not, this seems like a weird design because you have to hold the freehub assembly to keep it from tightening during even a simple tire change.
