I went to Beech Mountain a couple weekends back after a big rain the day before & had some trouble with my Minion/Nevegal clearing the mud.
I am headed back this coming weekend, & realized after seeing pics of the race that I will be doomed if I don't purchase a set of mud ties before Sunday (Rain in the forecast all week).
I have been reading up on the forums & see tires that are good for thick mud, thin mud, or wet rocks/roots. My concern is that Beech has all those combined rocks, roots, & mud. See link below for pic recap of the race: https://www.pinkbike.com/news/recap-pro-grt-5-beech-mountain-2014.html
I was thinking something like a 2.5 up front (for rock/roots), & a 2.3 in the back? I am currently open for any suggestions on width & tire.
I'm sure their are others. Nexcavator, Muddy Mary, and Shorty are the least aggressive and will grip better on the rocks and roots, but less on the mud. The others the opposite.
One you thing you can do is take a tire like the swamp thing and cut the knobs down in height. That use to be pretty common back in the day.
