So I have a GT chucker (don't moan about the bike, I know they're not the best just what I have to work with) and I'm so paranoid about the derailleur kicking into the spokes and mashing it's self up. It happened to me when I took the no bike on a half pipe a few years ago.

Is there a type that is less prone to this or a way to stop it happening or reduce the risk? Bar going single speed.

I used to BMX, stopped 2 years ago after a bad crash and hurting my back then a few mates and I took some MTB down the local jumps and really enjoyed it.

you tend to find different cage lengths, so maybe a short cage would be better for you.

also some of the newer rear mechs have clutch so might be more reliable than they used to be
using a chainguide may also help you

or single speed if your only gona use It for jumps

A shimano saint rear derailleur is what you want. It is only available with the short cage but it has a the "shadow 2" clutch setup. It can only swing 25t, so you can run a 1x setup with an 11-36. They are $$$ but worth it.
