I have been looking at a few 20" bikes for our son lately. He is about to be in that size and loves to ride. I wanted to see if any of you guys have had some good or bad experiences with some of the major brand 20"ers. I have good connections with a Trek dealer which is making me lean that way, but I am open to brands. We are not expecting him to be a pro, so nothing top tier is really needed. A simple bike with a few speeds and mechanical brakes should be fine (not a back pedal brake).

There is no top tier in junior bikes, there is a good and bad bike, so i would say buy a trek or a specialized 20" so if you have a connection with a trek dealer i would say buy it, and also i started my riding with a junior trek my first bike

Your best bet really is to get kids on a BMX so the kids get some serious style.

I dont agree with darrell the best way is to get a normal bike that will handle mountain terrains

If it's got 20" wheels, it's not going to be great off road. Don't start them off with suspension, or they'll never learn smoothness and good technique. And start them on flats too. Let them learn to bunny hop properly and once they can clear 30", get them clipped in if they want.

They are better at off road than you think, I have a sister who is riding a 20" specialized and I am 13 years old so it was not that long, when I rode a 20" , the new junior bikes are even more capable at offroads ,I know it because of my sister and also it is too early to do tricks for a kid rides a 20

The issue is wheel size. 20" wheels don't roll well over obstacles. There's no improvement to geometry that's going to change that. However, 20" wheels are a great way to develop great technique.
