In your State:

2010 Specialized P1 DJ mountain bike - $500 (West St. Paul ) --> offer 400 maybe 450
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/bik/4621160960.html

This one's kinda dated, but originally a very solid build.

new Haro Steel Reserve 1.1 $569. You can buy a suspension fork later, if you want it.

I would stay away from the .243 if you're doing more street than DJ. It's long and slack, and built with more DJ/Slope style/ HT free ride/DH in mind than street. That said, I had one and I loved it for everything I did. Built in derailleur hanger and stupidly solid chain tugs (if it comes with). You could probably email Eric if it doesn't come with them.

Is that first one capable of having a derailleur put on some gears?

Specialized has an archive to look at their bikes from their website. I'd look into it but I'm at work currently.

(My polite way of saying "look it up, my friend")

I just bought a 2015 P26 which has alot better spec than a lot other bikes on the market. Going to use it all sorts of stuff and letting mates / GF get involved etc

The frame welds look good and the finish looks great. Couple of bits im going to change but they will all be hand me downs from my P3
