I am piecing together a Stumpy EVO 29'er, and am a little confused about which fork to put on there. I'm pretty sold on the Pike, but what's throwing me off is the offset option; either 46mm or 51mm. It's my first 29'er coming off of a 26" bike, so I'm not sure what to expect. Anybody have experience with this choice?

I'm not sure that it matters much. I'm running a 46mm Pike on my Stumpy. ArtsCyclery did an article on this a while back: http://blog.artscyclery.com/ask-a-mechanic/ask-a-mechanic-29er-forks-46mm-or-51mm-offset/ Pinkbike did one too.

I have a 46mm offset pike on mine. Feels good.

Specialized specced it as standard on the stumpjumper fsr evo 29 going by this.

Thanks guys. The Art's article was really informative.

Does anyone else have experience with the 51mm offset Pike?

51mm on 29er forks, think trek/Gary fisher do it on all 29ers it's called G2, I've only ever ridden 1 29er and it had the 51mm offset, I have nothing to compare it against but I certainly didn't notice any of the negative traits I'd heard about them

51mm offset for sure, it stops the front wheel feel like it's flopping from side to side especially on longer travel 29er forks (140mm plus)

Don't get this one. You'll have to explain it to me. If the front wheel is flopping from side to side you need some carbon rims.

Take a look at Trek's G2 geo, they explain it pretty well, and now it's not under patent you'll find more and more forks being made with 51mm offset and manufactures speccing it as OEM

I understand G2 fork offset and yes more manufaturers are producing 51mm offset forks. Its the floppy wheel comment I dont understand. Not trying to be an arse, just never heard that before.

I found it most noticeable riding early all mountain style 29ers. I believe the slacker angle combined with a bigger wheel makes the bike handle like a chopper and the front end can feel quite heavy especially at slow speeds. The fork offset counters this by allowing a slightly steeper head angle. I also found most people that hate on 29 have ridden giants from several years ago. They are notorious for feeling sloppy!
