Ok, switching my 2x10 from my 26" to my son's 27.5. Taking his 1x10 and putting it on the 26. It is a 30 ring to 11-36 cassette. Was thinking with the smaller wheel size it would be better to run a 32 on the front. Also going with a 40 t 11th gear so I can have a 1x11 and still run a short cage. Am I going to be OK with this setup? This is going on a 2014 Knolly Chilcotin with 160mm suspension.
I'm going the cheater 11 speed route with a OneUp 40 tooth gear. Is designed to run with a 10spd derailleur by taking a spacer out of the cluster. I have ridden the 1x10 with 30 front 11-36 on the 650b and it climbed pretty good. Was just thinking the 26" would make this spin too much and going to the 32 would make it about the same as with the 650 but add the climbing gear with the 40t. We have a lot of steep ascents around here. Pretty much every trail has a climb before being able to bomb down the good stuff. Some of the climbs can be pretty technical so figured the 40 would be helpful. Especially now that I had knee surgery this summer. Can spin fine but don't need to be crushing it up steeps.
The one up gear isn't an 11th speed. You are just removing either the 15 or the 17 tooth cog from the cluster and adding the expander. Still 10 speeds.
Yeah I go with 30t and a 11_36 for 650b and 32 t 11_34 for 26er . Gear range feels very similar. I can climb fine with either of these. Tried a 32 for the 650b and couldn't do the climbs I could before. But I think my ideal setup would be 32t with a 40 extended cog, Can't pedal faster than 30mph with a 30t upfront. But that's a rare occasion so not to bothered.
Exactly what I was going to try. Got a 32t front and 11-36. Got the one up 40 for the rear, so should have all the gears I need and can run the zee FR derailleur too.
