Im off to Portugal next June for a weeks riding. It will be my first time abroad flying and was wondering if anyone can give me any advice regarding booking a flight with a bike bag. Is it best to ring up the airline for prices or can it be done online easily ? Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends who you are flying with, but never had to book in advance, nor heard of anyone else having too. Just rock up with your kit Big Grin

Normally flown out Business class to Geneva (tons of air miles points saved up) which allows me to take 1 checked suitcase and 1 bike bag for no extra fee.
Though I believe Economy is anywhere between £70-£100 extra for the bike to be checked in, as long as it's under 32kg.

No idea about Easy Jet, though having a look at this thread and giving it a search will turn up some replies: https://www.pinkbike.com/forum/listcomments/?threadid=59197&pagenum=1

In terms of the bike itself. You will need to transport the bike in a MARKED bike bag, which you can get quite cheap from CRC (This is the one I use:http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/chain-reaction-cycles-complete-bike-wheel-bags-crc-logo/rp-prod106851. You will also need to take both wheels off, deflate the tyres, remove the pedals and handlebars. Can also carry all your tools in the pockets that line the inside of the bag, which is a bonus.

Just make sure the weight for the bike bag is under 32kg, which is the maximum allowed weight for checked luggage for any airline.
