Anyone have some files on the rides around Radium (High Roller, Deja View for example) that I can load up into my Garmin? Heading there next week.

Neither of those are authorized trails, gps info is baaaad...
Unauthorized building is putting a black eye on mountain biking in the valley And hurting future authorized trails.
Letters in news paper, hot topic of land use meetings....

i said this would happen a couple years ago.....

These are rides I like when I am in that area. I was told by the bike shop that I should venture into the private land on the other side of the canyon from the Johnson. I can see those trails not being authorized for sure though!

It is just a matter of time IMO

There are over 25 trails in the area and only a few are "legal" but there is no reason why this won't change. There is no way to enforce this and the locals are riding these illegal trails all the time along with the tourists.

All good stuff there, problem is there are just as many opposed who I'm sure were not Pollled.

I've sat in enough meetings with the opposed to know. It has not stopped the process just sloooowed it down.

There have been ongoing discussions on authorization and there will be more trails on the "authorized" list by the end of the summer.

There is a difference when it's 10-20 local riders on a trail in a week vs 100 when the visitors arrive.

Take swansea for example. Before the bike parks open there are usually 5-10 trucks 90% visitors On a sat. After they open maybe 1 truck a day locals.

Johnson, Kloos & Swansea might be the only MANAGED trails in the area, but others trails that people (locals) ride are not in any way illegal. They are "un-managed trails". Un-managed does not mean un-authorized nor does it mean illegal.

Edit: oops there is one exception, but it gets very little traffic and is in an area that hunting is allowed but not bikes.

Bike trails are an easy target, and do very little damage compared to all the areas that are destroyed by moto's & rednecks driving trucks & quads. IME most opposition to trails here is NIMBY-ism & should be seen as nothing more.

the landowner asked the CVCS to build new trails on that land not very long ago...

There is a difference when trails are in wildlife management areas(deja veiw), and provincial parks (parts of juniper). And it is illegal in these areas.

The trail damage is only a part of the opposition issues. Others are parking, traffic in the neighborhood and noise...there are many reasons people come up with to lobby against trails And being crown land they have a right to voice their opinion. Nimbyism yes but being a democratic society this is the challenge. Its not as black and white as some riders in the valley feel.

I'm all for new trails, but imo some should stay off the radar.

The more bikers upset the opposition the more noise the opposition makes to government staff.
When this happens it slows the authorization process down. Mainly because the government staff does not like conflict, if its there they will not move forward Until all the official requirements are completed. Which takes years....

Problem with local gov't staff is they are just looking for reasons to say no & not helping find an alternative/happy middle ground. When they start asking for "gps files of all the illegal trails in the valley" it shows their bias.
