Prepping for a trail build here in the pacific north west. Will have to clear a few hundred meters of thick salal, about 2-3 feet deep. What's the most efficient hand tool for clearing salad? Machete? Pruning shears? Something else?
long handled Billhooks are great for 1st/clear cuts , machetes are good but you end up bending over alot to use them , which for me with my shit back is a no no
3 months on and I've now cleared and built about 1km of trail through thick salal. Used nothing but long handled compound pruners, a mattock plus time and hard work. Salal pulls up easier than I thought it would. Bottom line, don't let some dense salal deter you from pushing a line through it.
