I'm looking for an all-mountain/freeride hardtail with the following features: - steel - 26" wheels - dropper compatible seatpost diameter (31.6 or 30.9) - tapered headtube - sliding (horizontal) dropouts - a 142x12 rear axle.
142x12 with horizontal dropouts, I've never seen that. Although I've never even seen 142 horizontal drops at all. Likewise, steel with a tapered headtube (or even a 1.5") will be hard to find. Post up if you find anything, but I think you may need to make some compromises. I imagine an aluminum frame is out there with those specs but I haven't come across anything myself. Good luck.
Sounds like you might need to go custom. This guy in the UK comes close but no sliding dropouts and current options are 650b and 29er but he'll build a 26er I'm sure, or something from 2souls.
Theres always this too http://canfieldbrothers.com/frames/nimble-9 has almost everything you're looking for bar the wheel size and tapered headtube (its a 1.5 but you can run a reducer on the top to make it tapered)
Production privve shan used to come in 26" inch fills all the other requirements. Ragley soon to release new frames wouldn't surprise me if 12X142 is to be added but may be 650b . Minus the dropouts many good options from Ragley, Stanton, Cotic, BTR, Curtis, Chromag
http://www.btr-fabrications.com/product/ranger/ this might be close but quite dear.
In all honesty if I was going to drop the money id go 650B and take everything else.
Ok but you'll miss out on one of the best ragging hts out there.
Agreed!! I have 2 Sovereigns. I have v1 as my DJ/goofing around bike; and a v2 as my trail hardtail. I was just curious about building up another 'freeride' hardtail.
http://www.curtisbikes.co.uk/frames/curtis-am6/ has everything you need, has a 44mm headtube instead of a tapered, but that only allows you to run even more forks, can still run tapered steerer

As an ex Curtis owner, I can honestly say order one, they are everything and more.
I only sold as I needed to, not because I wanted to and still regret to this day.
nothing not even a mk1 evil beats Curtis' intricate attention to detail and that coupled with the finest steel on offer and the fact that it'll probably outlive you too is a win win win in my books.
Just prepared to have a $1k to spend on frame or else just buy a cheapy NS or something of similar ilk.
