Hi guys and girls had a bit of time out from riding did a bit of dh last year but time and work i found it hard to do up lifts rode bmx up till 7 years ago when i was 21 and feel bit left behind really fancy just getting back in the saddle but feel ill look a tit at 28 lol any others restarted?

No worries about that. Lots of old guys are pedaling BMX bikes. Coming from big bikes may make the change back to a 20" difficult though.

I started up again at 35 then did in my back fixing a house at 37. Just started up again at 39. And despite feeling weaker than ever right now BMX is bringing me back fast after just a few times out!

Gotta say it was pinkbike that got me back into it!

Got on a bmx at Rays in Ohio yesterday for the first time in 15 years. 33 and waaaayyyyy out of shape made me feel like a tool when watching the other guys and KIDS rip it up. I pretty much stuck to the beginner room but at least I did it. I don't think you're ever too old to get back on a little bike. It was fun and I may go back tomorrow...

I would look into a 22" BMX Bike. It's hard to find a complete bike other than craigslist but S&M makes frames and forks and wheels. Indust Bike Co in Texas makes frames and forks. I personally ride a 22" and it is an amazing feeling. Especially on dirt. It makes everything so much easier and the added size does not add hardly any weight. Plus other than the frame, fork and wheels you can swap any 20" bmx parts over!

Yep! And they feel amazing. I was skeptical about riding one at my local park since it's pretty tight but it does the job well. You can ride street, park, dirt, even flatland if you really wanted. S&M is the biggest company making stuff. FBM has done some custom 22" frames and now offers their CB4K Fork in a 22" option. Mike Laird has made some 22" frames. Faction is the company that started it about 10 years ago. They really blew up in Texas. They got a lot more popular when guys were going on the Trail to Dreamline trips with them. And the added wheel size hardly affects tricks. I can still barspin, tailwhip, flip, and spin just as on my 20".

I could see that being a good size. 24 is just a bit too mountainbikey for me. As long as they make 22" K-Rads I'd be up for trying one out.

Cruisers are a pretty far cry from a "mountain bike", but if you take my 24" single speed "dirt jumper" that I made as close to a BMX as I could and call that a mountain bike I see your point.

Normally cruisers have a slacker head angle than 20" bikes so they do feel "chopperish" but more models are getting tightened up. Add to that the lack of smaller tires out there in the 24" size and you exacerbate the situation. You pretty much have to go with a race tire or you are forced to go to 2.4 which will add more to the rotational weight of an already larger wheel (compared to a 20") and you have a bike that feels bulky and sluggish when coming from a 20". It is hard to find a good street/DJ cruiser and it's sad that that the BMX manufacturers are being out BMXed by "MTB" companies making tighter frames with tighter head angles and suspension.

The 22" BMX market seems almost stalled, they have been out for a long time (I believe they were out prior to 1983) and then I think Faction started an effort to make them more mainstream in 2007. I'm not a fan of Faction's advertising "they are better, faster, cooler than any other bike and this frame has such perfect geometry we won't even tell you what it is other than it's perfect." SnM has a few frames out as well in the 22" market so it looks like the size may be here to stay as a niche market at least. I would like to build one up as well but it will be an expensive test. I have not seen one in person nor do I know of a dealer that sells them in Canada. Meh, I'd do it anyhow if I can scrape some $$ together after the wife going NUTS for Christmas.

For me the main similarity to mountain bikes, DJ's and cruisers is the way bigger wheels soak everything up. It makes the transitions feel gentler and almost smaller. In the dirt though the way slightly bigger wheels make a huge difference with rolling over things I think the 22's could be a slight compromise in the feel I like that works out perfectly.

Dammit I just spent on setting up a 20'' to feel real nice and now I want to try something else!
