Off-season/rainy days - spin bike vs trainer?

We're in the middle of a bit of a shitty stretch of weather which as me feeling lazy and got me thinking about what kind of training I can do at home.

What's the consensus on trainers? I can find used spin bikes for anywhere between $100 to multiple thousands, or I can buy a fluid trainer and junky road bike to set up instead. Is one better than the other or should I just look for a good deal?
