Paint stripper is nasty s*%t! So please wear chemical gloves and glasses! Best stripper I've used is called "Aircraft Stripper" and I get it at auto paint supply houses. Usually takes a few sessions to get all the paint off. You will need stripper, a small paint scraper (puddy knife), wire brush and steel wool. It WILL rust if you dont clear coat it afterwards.

Another option is to take it apart, bring it to a powder coating shop, and just have them sand blast it, the finish will be slightly matte though. Then you'll have to clear it.

Spray can clear sucks. It is really thin, if the metal is really clean, you might be able to convince an auto body shop to clear it with much higher quality paint than anything from a spray can.

It's somewhat difficult to remove factory paint, but it will come off. It just takes a while, because there are a lot of coats/layers of paint and primer.
