Hi guys and gals.

I went and rode a bike park in southern Missouri this weekend at a festival called SingleTrak Mind at the Two Rivers Bike park south of Springfield, MO. They have everything from beginner to expert slopestyle courses, a downhill course, and some other really fun technical stuff. I rode my rigid Haro 29'er with a Niner carbon fork. Had a blast! I was kind of scared at first but I came to realize that bike of mine can take some abuse and I really want to further my skills doing drops and features. They also had a huge air bag contest and that looked pretty legit too.

Friends had a Diamondback Assault 2 with a Manitou Circus. I know that's a pretty good fork just from reading. His bike looked pretty sweet but I don't really want to go spending that kind of money.

I was wondering is it possible to get a decent hardtail DJ 26" for 500ish? I really just don't know alot about the bmx type geometry or components. I'm cool with building a bike as I've built two of my mtb's from a frame up.

I'm thinking of selling my Felt crossbike to fund this. I don't really ride it that much. Bought it to ride gravel and hated being bent over for hours on end. It's a fast bike but I'm not a roadie and I don't care to be.

There's a few old abandoned DJ dig sites around that I would like to revamp and I do dig work on my local trails so I might have some pull about putting in some ladder jumps and possibly some wall rides.

Thanks in advance.

If you dont mind used parts you can build a DJ pretty cheap, 500 for new parts is not happenin..

My first real DJ cost me 400 off Craigslist, which is what I'd suggest you doing.. It gives you the ability to meet someone and give the bike a spin..

check pb buy/sell section. You won't be able to build anything for 500.

Building always cost more I realize. Any brands or specs I should look for?

26" Kona shred dirt jumper - $350 (Peculiar)
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/bik/5754889670.html

This one is dated (I'm guessing a 2005?) but it's still strong, and it would definitely get you jumping.

2005 Ironhorse Porter Pro - $200 (Leavenworth, KS)
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/bik/5734487719.html

This one is also a 2005. Better geometry than the Shred (note how the rear wheel comes up closer to the seat tube--that means the chainstays are shorter. Definitely a bike that was respected at the time: http://ridemonkey.bikemag.com/threads/iron-horse-porter-pro.144318/ [L=http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=215069]http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=215069[/L

For a new bike, you could go with a Haro Steel Reserve. Complete with rigid fork for $569. Then you could add a sus fork later (although if it's a 20mm thru-axle fork like most are, then you'd need a different front hub).

Or the Steel Reserve 1.2 does have a sus fork.

Black Market
Transition
NS Bikes
Deity
Specialized P.26 (or older P1's, P3's etc.)
Giant STP (but not the STP "3")
Haro
etc

As far as specs, on DJ frames, the top tube will always slant down to a low seat tube. It keeps the seat out of the way. So, between Small, Medium, Large, they will often have exactly the same low seat tube.

The key difference though will be the length of the front end, which affects your "Reach."

In general the "actual" top tube measurements for DJ bikes are:

Small 21.5" tt
Medium 22"
Large 22.5"
XL 23"

"Actual" top tube is measured like this. BMX bikes do this, while Mountain and Road bikes typically talk about "Effective top tube" (which tells you the distance where the seat would be). DJ bikes are often measured more like BMX.

Wow, so much info. You guys rock!
I do really like that Haro steel reserve but I'm not sure I want to go for that yet. The iron horse is the closest to me. I just sold some cranks for 56 so I'm almost there funds wise if I got it.

The steel reserve is a very good bike. Honestly if somebody broke into my house and stole all my bikes, and if i were unable to get any of them back, the steel reserve 1.1 would be the first bike i would go out and buy.

Good to know. My main ride right now is a Haro Mary SS converted to 1x10. CroMo rides so nice!

Oh and speaking of which, your thread got me thinking of a few years ago when i wished i had the NS metropolis complete, so I decided to look it up to see how much the metropolis 1 costs, and i found this:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/th/en/ns-bikes-metropolis-3-dirt-jump-bike-2016/rp-prod138369

Its a bit over your budget and you can upgrade the bike from there. Its already an awesome frame with some pretty good parts.

From my WTP Crysis bmx complete i would trust the salt parts.

Good looking bike. Not crazy about the pink on it though. Definitely a good price. Saving that one. Wink Got about 100 saved so far

Will be worth it in every way. One awesome thing about chromoly frames is the ability to switch between rigid and suspension if you choose to.
