Just wonder if I can use my xt m8000 42 tooth and put in on an xtr 11-40 want to save the weight but don't want to loose gear. They are both aluminum but not sure if it fit. Basically just swap xtr 40 tooth for an xt 42?

I would guess a 42t extender cog built for 10 speed wouldn't work on an 11 speed cassette. The spacing on it would be too big. There are extender cogs for 11 speed cassettes though. Check out One Up components.
