Sprag clutch hub with instant engagement:

Details here

Honestly, even with the extra weight, I think this is fantastic on the paper.

However, I have some serious concern about durability and maintenance (possible regular need to "repack" the hub with fresh oil/grease). Given the high torque involved there, I wouldn't be surprised the sprags develop play pretty quickly due to wear...

Here's how a sprag clutch work:
--> go to 40 sec to see the mechanism in action.

O+

a greese port would be a smart addition to that design

I can't see how that won't add a bunch of drag.

I dont want to come across as anti technological progress and all that, but i like the current Pawl/ratchet style freehub engagement.
I love the loud, crisp clicking sound of a good quality hub, for me that has always been one of the iconic sounds of mountain biking.
I dont even care about the engagement time or drag or such, just give me a nice loud crisp click!

It's been done before, in several different iterations.
I rode the Shimano version for a while.
It's nice seen from a functionality point of view, but all that has used the system so far, either accepted they were pretty heavy, or that they were not all that sturdy.

As far as I can tell, this is no different.

Good to know.

I love the concept but trying one seems to be a high risk, especially because they are claimed to be pricey...

clearly you've never tried a stealth hub or any other silent mechanism. They're pretty crazy, the only sound from the bike is tires, suspension, and chainslap if you don't have it wrapped right.

I've tryed the DT Swiss, which was very quiet but not completely silent, i really just prefer the loud hub, my trail bike you can hardly here the hub over the noise of the trail/wind, i dont think its the same without, something is just missing.
