i've just purchased a new rear wheel - had it custom built from a well known online bike company. Hope pro evo hubs with Stans MK3 Flow rims. look the nuts. but. there doesn't look like there is any lip to seat the tire (or any tire for that matter) into, it's just a straight up lip with no concave section, which is very confusing and doesn't look right at all. My previous set of rims had a significant lip to seat the tire bead into... https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-9VhxPPg09taXFRWXJBZTlscXNiLUpFTjBCZHVMNWFNMGQ4

is this normal?? or should i look to get it sent back??

Mate, they're meant to be like that, loads of rims dont have a bead hook, its simply not needed. Air pressure and the tyre bead are more than enough to hold on your tyre, and the lack of bead hook actually makes for a stronger rim.
