I'll dig this up to ask a question...

I might be heading over to St John's in August to visit my Dad and bros... so I was thinking it would be pretty sweet to get some riding done on new soil. It would be too much hassle to bring my own bike all the way from Scotland so is there anywhere decent to hire proper AM / FR / DH bikes in the area, and any good trail guides?

Cheers Wink

I'm two hours outside st johns, do if your heading east I'll for sure show you around, as far as in st johns goes I'm not familiar with the trails there, although moving in there in September.

I don't think there's anywhere that does rental of any kind of real bikes, though you might want to check in at Freeride Mountain Sports or Cychotic bike shops to be sure. There aren't any official guides around, but if you talk to Chris at Freeride I'm sure he would take you out or put you onto someone who could. For that matter, you can PM me and I'll either be able to take you out and show you the trails or put you on to someone who can. Trails are super technical, lots of rocks and roots. Weather should be familiar for you, coming from Scotland. Big Grin

What is the general attitude of the people and authorities in Newfoundland towards mountain biking and trail building?
What about biking on hiking trails? Last time I did a road trip to Newfoundland 3 years ago with my xc mountain bike on board I had a hard time finding any trails. Didn't seem to be any "trail centers" to be found most places I went. I never had a chance to spend much time around the avalon peninsula where it sounds like most of the trails are. I took a drive up the viking trail on my trip. Talk about epic coastline and mountains! I could see gros morne being an amazing place for riding if there were bike trails around there. I did ride some of the rail trail through the clarenville area where I stayed with family but mostly just encountered quads riding out there. Also went riding with a friend up and down bear mountain in clarenville. Had to walk most of it cause of stairs and other obstacles(its really a hiking trail) but was fun, lots of rocks and some rooty sections in the woods.
As far as I can tell there seems to be alot of "crown land" or wilderness land in Newfoundland which seems to be prime conditions for epic mountain bike trails. Again, not sure if a person could just go out and ride anywhere or make some trails in the middle of the woods somewhere.
Sorry for rambling on, just a snowy day in edmonton stuck inside dreaming of riding some epic trails. Big Grin

If your ever around Corner Brook, the local bike shop here (cycle Solutions) they are making some really sweet trails. I work at the shop and i road some of the trails the other day and they are soo sweet! They also do tours and they'll take you around on most of the trials. They are xc trails but it the extra travel well help.

filmed in and around the hillview/clarenville area. the freeride stuff is the trail i built, and most of the downhill pov stuff was filmed up on bare mountain in clarenville. all within the past few days.

When are you going to be in St. John's? I will be there for a few weeks in august and i should have an extra bike with me for some DH if your hard up for a ride or stop into Cychotic cycles or Freeride mountain sport downtown and they should be able to help you out

Cheers

Hey man, I am fairly new to both Clarenville and biking, and have been trying to find some good spots around here, mostly just following the hydro lines and stuff like that. Would love to get out and find some other trails. Where is the entrance to the Bare Mountain trail you were riding in the video above? Also know of any other trails around?

I wouldn't mind exploring some trail out in Clarenville, we should hook up some weekend.

Yeah man anytime I'm home I'm down for a ride. Living in town for school now though so it would only be on weekends

yeah its a cool spot, but not going to lie, if you want the real newfoundland experience you have to go "out around the bay" as they say. check out some rural newfoundland towns, althought st johns is a great place and i do enjoy my time here as well
