IMO the best way to build berms is to have a line that your already using for the corner as a guide for angles. Digging out the inside of a berm does indeed help form a berm better plus what ever is below ground level will be harder than the fresh stuff up top . Also good berms take time to dial in . For me the reason for a berm is to increase speed thru a section of turns.

Here is video of the begining of one . This corner was cut in orginally just by hooking it and hoping you didn't wash out or get thrown.

Later it became this

after a good rain a a few months of riding

other examples of my work . Most have rock ,debri, and anything else as a filler with dirt on top.

To get the shape right you can lay some stick out and then ride the corner to see what it looks like. Then as Lachlan60 says it is easier to dig down from the inside of the berm, so that some of the berm is below ground level this way you dont have to dig as much dirt, and it will drain fine if you slop the hole away from the berm. Heres a pic of our latest berm

dig into the ground so it drains into there

Most people say build the frame out of logs, But the crumble after a while..
Try to get Sods(Dont know how to spell it) And stack them up in the fourm of your burm, Try not to my the back straight up tho it could fall, Then again you coudl always put some logs at the very bottom to get the planed shape. Then layer it all in good dirt, and shape it with the rake, pack it down then you Soak it with the Hose, watering can or buckets or water, Which ever works. Wait around 4 days while it hardens in the sun. Then when you go to ride it make sure its harden, If not packen it again and ride it for a while to make it hard.(If not hard from sun). Try digging out infront of it aswell to make it deeper and throw that dirt on it to make it up higher, The higher the better. Hope this helps you out, and good lucktup
