bigquotesTheres no need in going with a Chris King or Hope hub
so...he should stick with his 14 engagement deore hub?Fab

You could setup your deore SS, but if you actually want to progress and become a better rider, get something that engages faster. A hope hub is really the cheapest way. I used to spend way more money on my mountain bike when I was your age...so it shouldn't be that difficult to get a decent hub...

well...yes cause he is 16 and has no money. I've been there, pretty sure most of us have.
At 16 paying that much money for a hub would have been something I could only dream of. Even now that Iam working and have the money, it still sucks to have to spend so much money on a hub, but I do it anyway cause its nice to have nice parts.

If you want to ride now, buy the best quality wheel/hub you can, or you can take a few years off riding to save up your money and buy King hub and let everyone else pass you by, your choice.

My friend Matt works at Wendys part time. He's 15, and he just built an echo pure...has a lot of nice parts too. Oh and he's got a hope hub. lol And Mike, who rides a zoo, is 16 and also has a Hope.

When I was in my last year of highschool, I bought a chris king wheelset. lol Working at mcdonalds man! Just get a part time job, and it's really not hard to get decent parts.

But now that I'm out of school and working full time...I've built 3 bikes. lmao

Oh for sure, same with me man, I worked my ass off as a weekend dishwasher and missed out on a social life for years just to have a nice trials bike.

Its all about how much your into it I guess. Some people have other intrests besides trials (crazy people) that they like to spend money on as well.

When your 16 that minimum wage part-time pay check doesn't stretch very far. Its all about your priorities.

Very true.

But I guess it's not like he's building a full bike. If he could save for 2-4 weeks of working part time, he could probably afford a hope hub...

My god, speaking of which, don't they just sound lovely? I like the sound of my king, but there's nothing louder and sexier than a hope! Smile It's funny when I ride with matt and mike, just cruising down a road and all you hear is the intensely loud ratcheting noise...haha. My old king is pretty loud, but the new bmx one I have is silent...

I've never hurd a Hope or a King in person before, I have only ever ran freewheels.

That said though, my ENO sounds like a fishing rod being reeled in with something pretty big on the other end, and I like it, people can hear you coming from a mile away. The sound makes you feel important somehow doesn't it? Or is it just me.

I second that.

LOL! My brother has an ENO on his bike. It's loud, but it can't be heard over the freehubs we have. The Eno seems to work great though.

Yeah, I love, never had a problem with it ever. But like I said, I have never tried a King so I really don't have any comparison. I'd like to try one some time to see what all the fuss is about and to see how loud it screamsWink .

I run a King headset, so I know what the quality is like in thier products, but as far as Iam concerned, the ENO is more than I will ever need in quality and performance.

The cheapest wheel I could come up with that would still be pretty nice is this:

Meta Fixed Rear Hub

ACS Claw Freewheel

Alex DX32 Rim

those parts all together before tax would be $155

Then you have to factor in the cost of spoke/nipples, and the labour charged for the wheel build.

If you wanted to upgrade to a nicer freewheel with 72 engagement points (ACS has 36) the next cheapest option is the Monty, which would bring the parts total to $195

Just some stuff to consider.

Just to give you an idea, my rear wheel is a Alex DX 32 rim laced with black spokes/nipples to a Surly non-disc freewheel hub with White Industries ENO freewheel. the total cost of that wheel was about $260.
