Ive been playing around for a bit now on my moms monolta slr and i want to get a camera of my own, im looking into a digital slr, but i dont know alot about cameras, like what to look for, good brands, etc, ill be doing a vareitly of photos from biking to taking pics of animals at the zoo, so which cameras should i look into, ive only looked at the nikon d40 so far, what do u guys think of it?
The d40 isn't a bad camera for starters, but i would recommend that you save an extra 200$ or so and purchase yourself a d60. You get to have 4 million more pixels, a new 18-55 VR lens (which works great), and a new dust sensor. I have had mine for almost 1 month and I am amazed wit what I can do with it. Hope this helps and have fun on deciding which one is THE one for you. Pat
If you want to get more advanced with your photography, then I'd save up for a better camera than the D40. You only have a choice of 2-3 lenses with the D40 if you want autofocus. Like what was mentioned earlier, the D60 would be a better choice. You could also look into a Canon Rebel XT or XTi depending on how much you want to spend.
I like the Pentax K100D. Pentax is nice if you're on a budget since almost all there lenses are compatible. I can take one of my say 10 year old lenses and stick it on a new K100 or K10 and it will work.0
There are three kinds of DSLR users; Nikon users, Canon users and everyone else. The latter being a minority in my opinion as Im yet to personally meet one. You cant go wrong with either Canon or Nikon but lenses are not compatible so if you buy a Canon and then get a bunch of Canon fitting lenses, you cant put them on a Nikon and the same the other way round.
If youre aiming budget end (which you should be as a beginner) you will be best with a Nikon D40 / D60 or a Canon XTi, XSi (I think, Im a brit and they are called 400D and 450D over here). The XT is old and not that amazing anymore. You cant really go wrong with any of these really as they are quite competitively priced although the D40 is a bit short on pixels these days. Get yourself to a camera shop and have a play with them, I got a canon because my dad has one and I can nick his lenses, theres really not a lot between the two companies.
As for a non Canon / Nikon system, I really dont know because I just never hear of them, although Sony have got some cameras out with image stabilisers built into the body instead of the lens which is kind of cool

the k100 and 200 will be the best bang for your buck... Im kinda regretting getting a d300 over a k20d as I would have been able to afford some far better glass.
hey i need a little help with the same problem i want a nice first camera i was looking at the Canon PowerShot SX100 for 269.99$ anybody have any other good suggestions? dont have a lot of money to drop on a camera

I was in the same boat as you like 2 weeks ago and I started a thread on a different website and was advised to buy a canon powershot, so bought a can powershot a590 IS for £120 (think thats about $240 usd)
i was fooling around with that camera at blacks earlier today here it retails for 189.99$ its like the sx 100 but with a few less goodies im going to look into reviews on it

nikon has a far better slew of lenses and superior glass. you pay for what you get cheap is great originally but a year down the road when your switching bodies and junk your f'ed and more in the hole then when you started

i get what your saying but here I gotta disagree. with Nikon and canon alot of the money goes into Advertising...and the consumer pays for that, Pentax cameras are a lot more affordable, yeah I like the feel of my body alot more, and theres a few more extras on the 300 (2 live views, bigger LCD, higher res screen, more AF points, higher FPS etc) but the k20d has some better features as well (weather sealed, higher MP-not important to me but what ever.) all for 500$ less with a battery grip. the DA lenses are also in my eyes at par with the Nikons, and alot cheaper. Nikon lenses are very expensive. Right now I have pretty crappy glass due to blowing all my money on the body, if I had gotten a 20d, I could have had a great body and some nice lenses by now.
