I'm not going after anyone for posting anything, it was simply a question about approaching the person directly, as that seems to be the most effective manner. I haven't ridden swansea yet this year because golden has been in such good shape, and it's always a gong show at the start of the year. I feel your pain and don't know how to address it without having someone there personally policing it. Obviously the people doing these sorts of things lack the respect and won't respond to thoughtful pleas by your group. So maybe more drastic actions need to be taken, I don't know.
fist fights and rock throwing sounds like people have gone off the deep end and are beyond reasoning with. I honestly don't know what to suggest if that's the case. member's only gate access? something needs to be done to get people to accept responsibility for their actions because this sounds totally unacceptable.
I think that we need a riders/users code of conduct....These have existed in various forms over time, some written and some spoken, however maybe as a community we need to revisit this approach. Just remember that just because we are here and you are there doesn't mean these aren't your trials too, they are because you ride them and the only difference between you and I is that we make the decisions as to what happens on Swansea....but as riders we are all responsible to influence our fellow riders behavior in a positive way to to make sure that everyone behaves in a productive manner. These trails do not belong to anyone that abuses the access to them, no matter what form that takes.
because it sounds like it's a problem with one person, and that one person is known. if that person wasn't known, then sure, post it up to let everyone know it's not okay. It just seems easier to deal directly with the problem. what does this have to do with moose?
I posted this so as many people as possible see it. Lot's of noobs on the trails who assume they can do whatever they want out here. It seems as the tight biking community I once knew 10 years ago is not the same. Which is going to happen when people find out how sweet the sport is.
These noobs need to be informed of the unwritten rules bikers had at one time.
Rules such as; pick a guy up if he's walking if you have room. Don't blow by and dust him out Don't change someone's trails Stop and ask if a rider is ok when he's laying on the side of the trail after a yard sale. Don't use him as a jump. Clean up your garbage(the outhouse at Swansea is a friggin mess) Don't take trail tools home that are left beside the trail Stop and say hi if someone is doing trail work, ask if they need help(beer is good too) many others, but you get the point.
This has been the busiest year we have had out here that I can remember and the trails and locals are feeling it. I assume it's because many riders are not as busy working and have more time to play.
We all need to police ourselves or someone else will and that is never good. All it takes is for one prick in the truck of 5 to give the whole bunch a bad name.
The locals were awesome when I moved here, the first time I was hiking up Swansea on my own a truckload of guys picked me up. Right now there is locals who won't give directions to the trails or stop and chat at the bottom of the trail because of the bad experiences that have happened this year.
The bad apples will not be on here I am sure, but if enough riders who are responsible speak up when they see crap happening or let the new guy they bring out for the first time know what's what then things will turn around.
I guess that might be the best answer. If locals are around when it's busy, perhaps just wondering group to group at the bottom and briefly letting the riders know the current situations out there. What the problems have been and what needs to happen to help raise awareness for those not on these forums. Hopefully things turn around for you guys out there as I know how much work goes into developing a legitimate trail network, and it would be a shame for a few bad apples to ruin it for everyone.
well, me and my crew haven't been to swansea this year. or even last year if i remember correctly, but we've built "race of spades" and "billy dog(most props to silentj)" on moose mtn, and they are pretty well recieved trails to ride. we have discussed trying to get up to help you guys if there was a big organized trail day on sawnsea. and i don't think i am alone in our interest in helping out. i think it might help your frustration if you suddenly saw a shitload of albertans come up for a trail ride/build weekend that you organized. we've had some good success on trail days out here. i'm not trying to make more (organization)work for you dude, but i'm trying to think of a good way to build relationships and a positive focus of trail stewardship that might help you out. just my thoughts on the matter.
I imagine a Little of what D-man was doing was venting, props to You and all those who build Killer trail such as those at swansea. No-one should F-Arond with your hard work...

And we are Interested and thankful for the offer of support. THe Board of directors are meeting this thursday and we will be discussing this very idea. Be ready a scheduled trail work weekend is comming.
We rode @ Swansea on Saturday. Super dry and loose, as usual I guess, but good times for sure. We couldn't believe we were pretty much the only ones there? And yes, I bought a CVCS membership!
