Alright Boys, I’m getting ready to build a new nomad for my lady (likely this fall), she currently rides the original 2008 Nomad with a DHX air, Fox180mm TALAS upfront, RS Reverb post, and a pretty standard midrange build otherwise. We run 2 wheelsets, some IBIS XC rims with 2.4 schwalbe Rocket Ron tires (530g for a 2.4) and then the original wheelset that came with the bike has some Minion 2.5 EXOs for when we are doing some shuttling and riding the bike park.
These days we mostly pedal up (10-20km loops, some 30-40km rides thrown in at times) with occasional bike park/DH shuttle weekend thrown in for good measure. She’s comfortable with drops up to about 5-6 feet and she can do some pretty good sized table top jumps (lower aline is good, upper aline is mostly too big). She likes no joke at whistler (a good level of tech without being to gnarly for her). She is pretty easy on gear, weighs about 120 pounds(54kg).
The current rig is about 31lbs with the light wheels. The goal is to be about 28lbs with the light wheels. She will likely ride this bike for 5 years (like her current ride).
What I’m thinking:
Small Carbon Nomad Frame RP23 Fox 34 160mm Talas fork (should save about a pound compared to her current fork) Reverb Post (from Current bike) Shimano Xt Brakes Double ring +light bashguard setup upfront 10 speed SRAM setup (with the clutch setup) Race face Sixc handlebar (from current bike) Bontrager Rhythm Stem 50mm (from Current bike) Cranks? Current pedals are Straightlines, what about some lightweight flat options, and may give clipless a try. Crossmax ST wheels (light setup) Cheap Chinese carbon AM rims (for the heavy wheel set) She currently has the double ring chain guide, but I figure that with the clutch technology on the derailer we should be able to get away without it.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Don’t want to break the bank, but willing to spend some money since she will be on this bike for a while and we do ride a lot.

Great idea! Sounds like she is a good rider who will appreciate a build like this!!! First off is the frame, I too came from a 08 Nomad to the carbon version and she will be blown away by this frame! It just flat out rips and pedals SO MUCH better so I say YES, ditch the front derailleur and go with a single front. Im not the strongest climber and I run a 1x9, so the 1x10 especially with the clutch will be perfect!
THE DHX AIR and the gen1 Nomad has to be the worst shock/frame combo EVER! My 08 had one for 3 weeks and it was miserable...I probably noticed the mid stroke wallow alot more due to being 215lbs geared compared to her 115???
New Fox 34 160 for her weight should be superb, especially coming from the 180! She is light enough to where the 34mm stanchions shouldnt flex at all...
Great choice on the brakes and I like the idea on using the chinese carbon hoops! The rest of the stuff will work out fine. All in all it sounds like a real solid build that will be light years ahead in all areas. One thing I enjoy agout my carbon frame is how much the carbon muffles sound, its a quiet ride, and much stiffer! Shes gonna love it! Do post pics, both the old bike and new!!!
Not much to report other than a flats at the beginning and end of the ride. That part sucked otherwise, great weather. Nice trail (went early so didn't see too many other people).
