something similar to the Bionx system would be ideal.

clicky

Exactly! That's the beauty of the hub motor- you can use existing drivetrain components. It just adds electric assist in a very clean package. If you wanted to use a standard rear wheel you could find a surplus motor and have it connect to the cranks with a separate chain drive so you are only using it as an assist as well.

For the front wheels I'd consider using something like wheelchair hubs or wheels from a kid's bike trailer as their designed to mount on stub axles. A Cannondale Lefty hub would also be an option if you wanted to run disc brakes.

I'm not sure how I would mount any other brakes, so I was even thinking build up 2 with 20mm hubs, and run them on maxles with spacers.

I want to make the bike a 26" as it's most suited to his height, and I basically want it to be a bicycle for him to use as a car for appointments and visiting friends in town.

I definitely want the budget for this project to be capped at 1500$, and that's pushing it. So a bionx system is out. I'm thinking more of buying an electric motor, hooking it up to some sort of throttle, limiting the speed of the motor, and have it all running off an older car or atv battery, and we can just recharger it a few hours every night.

Look for a mobility scooter (granny wagon) and use the motor and drive out of that. Also the battery's have a good amount of power and can run for hours.

Also for the rear wheel, just use a regular mtb hub. You could then use the disc tabs to attach the drive from the electrical side. Innevitably your going to want to be able to disconnect the electric drive so it wont causes masses of drag.

I want to use the disc tabs for the rotor for the back brake though

the ad sounds pretty sktechy, but what wrong with just doing that? then you could just have a straight locked front axle, or what ever you feel like in the front

Hi, that's my new bike, but not my workSmile Frame is made by one cool guy here in Czech republic. It's not home made, it's more like a garage made (+-10 frames per year?), but maybe you are interestedSmile

Sounds like home made to me Razz That's still a home based operation cranking out limited numbers.

And that sounds pretty interesting, so I'll look into finding a less sketch ad like that, but I'm still worried about the speed and range that would give. I want it to be able to do at least 30km at around 30-40 km/h. That would get him to his furthest appointment at the Hospital and back, taking under an hour each direction.

I was thinking primarily of using things I have around the house and the shops I have access to for the electrical system. I.E. car/atv battery power source, and just charge it off of our battery charger at home, find some sort o electric motor, and one of the electrical switches that let's you select how much power you're letting through. Then hook that up to a chain drive.

Also, anyone know what kind of power I would be needing from this motor to achieve this? I'm sure there must be some sort of calculation for it, but I'm pretty clueless in physics. Damn teacher brutally destroyed my year and I wasn't able to continue the class Razz

Actually it's pretty hard to convince him to make something right now and you can wait for your frame more than year. He is not shippin to Canada, but if you are interested write me for further details: mikulashapka at gmail dot com.
