I Agree with you, Every camera clearly has its pluses and minuses but overall nikon would be best because of the fact that they sell decent lenses for a great price. DOnt rule out olympus they are incredible cameras aswell ( im running a 50d right now btwand had an xsi and an olympus 520.

Sony Alpha series DSLRs work will all Minolta Alpha Mount lenses (since Sony bought Konica-Minolta) so there are a lot of cheap but amazing quality lenses available, and Sony's own range of lenses is quite extensive so should really cover all the ones most people will ever need.
It's annoying they have a proprietary hot-shoe mount but you get adaptors for dirt cheap on eBay so it's not really too much of a problem.
They're great cameras, and shouldn't be ruled out by anyone looking to get serious about photography. In my experience they're easier to use for beginners than an entry level Canon or Nikon, where the menus and button layout don't seem as intuitive.
I'm now at the point of thinking about an upgrade to the trusty A200 however, so I think I'll be looking at a used Sony A700, Canon 40D or Nikon D300.
I need to fix my bike up 1st though so a camera upgrade is probably a long way off!
