A photographer friend of mine caught a bike thief in the act of stealing a bike, and trying to make up a bullshit excuse as to why he needed a screwdriver to unlock "his" bike
now I know this bike probably isn't up to Pinkbike standards, but I'm sure this guy just looks for any opportunity to grab a bike whenever he can
Might wanna keep an eye out for him, or his license plate number

Joe's Photo's of the event on Flickr

unfortunately Joe wants the pics taken down so I'll comply

Plates ARE traceable... look into it... I'm sure somebody will hurt him badly.

Nice work!

Did you report this, the cops probably won't do anything now, but it will at least be added to a file that could be used in a future prosecution.

I looked on several license plate tracing sites and they all charge a minimum of 20.00. You can try calling the ministry of transportaion for alberta and try them, they may be able to help further.

why would you try to steal that bike if you have a car?

Posted: Jul 6, 2009 at 18:35 Quote
yea it would be interesting to trace that license plate and see where this fellow lives and go pay him a visit to see what other stuff he has stolen
I'm gonna try to get my buddy to send the pics to the cops just so they can at least start a file on this weasel
I know that if I had caught this guy trying to steal my bike they would be wheeling him off the street on an ambulance stretcher!

Well just look at it. The guy invested in a $3 screwdriver and can sell the bike again for much more. Easy profit.

Nice to see this guy being caught. Hopefully he will be caught again, but next time by a security guard or police. Never know how much other stolen stuff he has at his house. Whether it be a Supercycle from WalMart or a Yeti 303, having a bike stolen (or anything) just blows. Probably especially in this guys case as it is most likely his main mode of transportation.

Someone should create a national bike thief beat down group. Put high end bikes out on the street with a flimsy lock and then watch it for hours with video cameras and baseball bats in hand.

Fairly sure those base ball bats would turn it into "entrapment" or something lame like that, and if it ever went to court it wouldn't be as strong a case.

I'm no lawyer though so that could be complete BS..... Personally I am a fan of the bats since the law is bullshit anyways. Nail the innocent guys and give the real criminals a slap on the hand, but that's a whole different ballgame.

Well, Huck you then.

I will gladly sign up.

Haha it's soooooooooooooo illegal. However, might be no need to get violent. Simply catch him, detain him and have him arrested. Bats for good measure and such.

That shit makes me sick. Cheap bike or expensive bike...makes no difference, it's theft. People who take stuff that don't belong to them deserve a beating.

They say in some countries, if you are caught stealing...you get your hand chopped off. Barbaric maybe, but I bet there would be a lot less theft if we did that here.
